Happy October!
As a member of the great unwashed … those people here in the US without Health Insurance … today is a good day. The first day to check out the new Affordable Care Act … known far and wide as Obamacare.
Oh, and there is that other thing … the Government Shutdown.
Those who know me well can make an educated guess as to my opinion on this. As was said by Napoleon, “Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.”
The responses from people today has been interesting, to say the least. Each side pointing to the other … most of us wondering what they are being paid to do.
A few quotes I will pass on that caught my attention …
“Under Obamacare, House Republicans may receive better treatment from their irrational Obsessive Compulsive Disorder around ending Obamacare.” This from a friend who is a social activist.
One of the earliest comments came from a professor …
“Happy Furlough Day to all my Federal Employee friends!
Hope you won’t be needing a paycheck any time soon.
Unemployment numbers for October have already increased by 800,000 today.”
… which set off a hailstorm of responses.
This one got a lot of attention … “my pension check came, my air traffic control job is safe. what shutdown? Osama hasn’t had a budget in since he took office.”
As did one of the responses to it … “my pension check came, my air traffic control job is safe.” … said the man who feels good … 10 hours into it. Anytime I hear an “I’ve got mine, screw you” comment I think of the quote by the Lutheran(?) pastor in WWII … “and when they came for me, there was no one left to help me”
Followed by … “Let’s hope Osama doesn’t have a budget since he’s dead. That would be creepy.”
And “GOP drinking poison waiting for President Obama to die. And only part of that was allegory.”
From a politician … “The right thing to do was to go to conference any time in that last six months, as we (the Democrats) asked them (the Republicans) 18 times but were told no …” “… now (the Republicans are) sitting on the other side of the aisle saying we want to shut the government down” Sen. Patty Murray – D, Washington.
But by far my two favorite responses were these.
First, from the professor who started the day … “So, I think I understand the logic behind shutting down the government. Everyone seems to agree that “government” wasn’t working. So, they called the Government Help Desk and were told to “shut it down and then re-start it again.””
And second, from a group of WWII Veterans who wanted to see the WWII Museum … shutdown or not.
WASHINGTON (CNN) —Busloads of World War II veterans, many in wheelchairs, broke past a barricade Tuesday morning to cross into the World War II Memorial, as onlookers applauded and a man playing the bagpipes led the way.
