… and why I took a nap this afternoon.

Biological_clock_humanDoing a bit of quick research here I see that Sleep is determined by  my Circadian Clock. That inner timepiece that determines all manner of things.

Okay.

So according to that, I took a nap right between Best Coordination and Greatest Cardiovascular Efficiency and Muscle Strength.

Slept clean clear through Fastest Reaction Time.

Well, that certainly explains a lot.

Walter_Crane12But in my defense, there is a lot of evidence that naps are a good thing.

Take Sleeping Beauty for example … she took a nap … and when she woke up all her problems were solved.

Every little girl worth her salt knows this.

And it is in Wikipedia, for goodness sake.

They wouldn’t lie to me, now would they?

So I could just chalk up the nap to my fervent efforts at problem solving.

And there is concrete medical evidence too … I cite:

Keep it short. A 20- to 30-minute nap may be ideal. Even just napping for a few minutes has benefits. Longer naps can lead to grogginess.

Find a dark, quiet, cool place. Reducing light and noise helps most people get to sleep faster. Cool temperatures are helpful, too.

Plan on it. Waiting till sleepiness gets so bad that you have to take a nap can be dangerous if you’re driving. A regular nap time may also help you get to sleep faster and wake up quicker.

Don’t feel guilty! A nap can make you more productive at work and at home.

I especially like the Don’t Feel Guilty part … I will just assume the 20 – 30 minute thing is for everyone else.

Napping offers various benefits for healthy adults, including:

  • Reduced fatigue
  • Increased alertness
  • Improved mood
  • Improved performance, including quicker reaction time, better memory, less confusion, and fewer accidents and mistakes

And as though that weren’t enough … we have this article about International Countries in which mid-day napping is practiced.

In the Greek study, the participants who took regular naps – 30 minutes or longer at least three times a week – had a 37% less risk of dying from heart disease

Health benefits. Who doesn’t want health benefits?

But above and beyond that everybody knows … on a day when you don’t have much to do, and the weather outside is dreary, and the skies are darkening, and maybe there is even the constant comforting tapping of rain and sleet on your new metal roof … days like this just beg for a nap.

And it made me happy.

I rest my case.
